WHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS
All over Kentucky, United Way works with individuals, volunteers, donors, and local charities within each community to answer the question: “What does this place need?”
THIS PLACE NEEDS YOU.
Together, we’re addressing challenges in education, income, and health to make real change happen. Help make your community a better place to live. Connect with your local United Way to give, advocate and volunteer at uwky.org. Because great things happen when we Live United.
WHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS: EDUCATION
Education Benefits Kids and Communities
Education is a cornerstone for success in school, work and life. It also benefits the whole community: High school graduates have higher earning potential, contribute more to their local economies, are more engaged in their communities, and are more likely to raise kids who also graduate, and go on to higher education or work.
United Way is about more than short-term charity for a few; we’re about lasting solutions that build opportunity for all. We look at the big picture to assess which resources are lacking or need strengthening, then we address those gaps to keep kids on track to graduation and beyond.
In Kentucky, only half of our kids are prepared for kindergarten. That’s not good enough. Every child deserves a good start in school and life. Through the work of many initiatives, including the United Way Born Learning Academy—which helps parents, grandparents and caregivers turn everyday moments into fun, educational opportunities for young kids—the 22 United Ways in the Commonwealth are bringing thousands of people together to solve the education puzzle and build stronger communities.
WHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS: INCOME
United Way helps people achieve financial stability
A good job benefits more than the job holder — it benefits his or her family, neighborhood and entire community. When we’re on solid financial ground, we’re more likely to have access to good-quality heath care, provide a good education for our kids, and contribute to our local economy. That’s why United Way focuses on lasting income solutions (that go beyond charity) to help people build skills and education necessary to get, keep and advance in a good job. And that’s why in Kentucky, we engage with dozens of partners from all sectors to offer financial wellness, coaching and planning to help anyone better manage their income, savings and assets.
WHAT THIS PLACE NEEDS: HEALTH Healthy communities are strong communities Being healthy isn’t just about personal diet and exercise choices. Healthy communities are ones that maintain parks and bike paths all across town, where all kids have access to safe playgrounds, eat healthy meals at school and engage in physical activity. Healthy communities support innovations like farmers’ markets in low-wage neighborhoods to offer more access to fresh food. In healthy communities, everyone has access to good medical care, fosters an active lifestyle and encourages people to care for and support each other. United Way is helping make it happen, with your support.
