Edna Campbell was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997.  After her diagnosis, Edna quickly became involved with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Louisville Affiliate as a board member and volunteer chair.  She was affectionately known as the “bra lady” due to her position as a bra fitter for Dillard’s Department Store.  Prior to her own battle with breast cancer, Edna aided numerous women whose bodies had been surgically disfigured due to the disease.  Having had the unique opportunity to become acquainted with so many survivors, Edna was prepared to face and ultimately beat breast cancer.  To this day, Edna continues to share her experience, and although retired from Dillard’s, volunteers to do prostheses fittings for the Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center.

Edna and HughIn March of 2006, Edna’s son, Hugh noticed a lump in his left breast and had a mammogram.  The results were benign.  Nearly two years later, Hugh returned to the doctor and received a diagnosis of Moderately Differentiated Infiltrating Ductal Adenocarsinoma.  At age 46, Hugh had a radical mastectomy on his left breast, followed by his first chemotherapy treatment in January 2008.

Like mother, like son.  Being part of a rare group of breast cancer patients, Hugh, has vowed to share his experience.  “Men need to know that breast cancer does not discriminate; it can happen to men too,” said Hugh.  Even as Hugh continues to battle his cancer, Edna and Hugh are both working hard to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure achieve its vision of a world without breast cancer.  You can support their efforts by donating to Susan G. Komen through Community Health Charities!
